“If your actions inspire others to dream more, learn more, do more and become more, you are a leader.”
-John Quincy Adams, 6th President of the United States
Some people at the top seem to believe they are free to eat the profits as if the company is theirs to consume. These are not leaders. Others at the top seem to be able to draw innovative ideas from their company and turn them into real value for all stakeholders. These people are leading.

This quote is not only an encouragement to those who do not feel they make an impact, but also a confirmation to those who have a natural ability to be a leader. In my case, I am not a gifted leader in many aspects but with this quote, I have realized that no matter what happens in life, little seeds are planted around us that bloom when it is the appropriate time. Anyone can be a leader in his or her own way.

Politics aside, President Adams spoke to the essence of leadership, which is inspiration. All of us know of someone who has inspired us to be exceptional in some way. And to inspire others should be enough if the result is that they make the world a little better in some small way.

Workers get promoted to management because they are excellent tacticians. The transition to management is difficult, but those who succeed master delegation. Show your people that you trust them, then get out of their way and let them learn. A leader doesn’t just show someone how to do a task; he or she shows them their potential.

The key words here are “actions inspire.” The very first step in leadership development begins with you. Only after self-development will you become able to lead others and use yourself as a model for others to follow while you work toward inspiring and helping them become successful. You must be able to lead yourself before leading others.
